Hazardous Waste Management

Why Attend

A huge explosion that destroyed the port of Beirut in 2020 is just one of many examples of the dangers associated with the ineffective and inappropriate management of hazardous wastes. These wastes can elicit a wide range of properties from explosive and flammable to carcinogenic and toxic. To manage these hazards requires a detailed understanding of related risk management options and their relative advantages and disadvantages; this training course uses the waste management hierarchy to first explore the concept of hazard and risk management and then identify appropriate waste management options for the safe and effective control of hazardous wastes.

This course provides practitioners, policy-makers and legislators with the knowledge and skills required to ensure the safe handling of hazardous waste and the related key areas for control.

Overview

Course Outline

Schedule & Fees

Course Methodology

This course will be highly interactive and include group discussions, case studies and syndicate work. It will include practical exercises that will allow all participants to use the knowledge they gained to demonstrate their skills in hazardous waste management.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the key requirements for the safe and effective storage of hazardous wastes including an appreciation of hazard and risk management and the role of the pollution linkage model;
  •  Recognize key controls in hazardous waste management at the site of production;
  •  Understand different definitions of hazardous waste and related hazardous waste properties;
  •  Have an appreciation of key policy approaches including sustainable wastes management and Circular Economy considerations;
  •  Appreciate options for reducing legally-compliant waste management costs through wastes prevention controls;
  •  Have an appreciation of health and safety management in relation to hazardous wastes including the use of engineering controls and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
  •  Avoid accidents by applying the correct handling methods for drums and containers used for various types of hazardous wastes;
  •  Have an appreciation of the role of emergency response plans to hazardous substance release;
  •  Understand the role of waste treatment and disposal options including energy from waste incineration and hazardous landfill for the safe and effective management of liquid (including oily wastes) and solid hazardous wastes, including infectious healthcare wastes and toxic industrial wastes.

Target Audience

This course is beneļ¬cial for individuals in industries that generate, manage, regulate and otherwise control in some way hazardous wastes. It is applicable to those who are new to their role and others with more experience but who may have relatively little formal training.
