Regional Economic Integration

Why Attend

This course programme evaluates the economic impact of the rise of regional economic blocs often seen as a source of both cooperation and conflict in trade and other policies. It examines both the role of government policies and the role of transnational corporations in shaping the process of globalization and regional integration. The module aims to look at the economic rationale for greater economic integration; examines why some regions are rich, while others are poor; examines the significance of transnational corporations for regional development; examines the impact of government in addressing issues of trade, competitiveness, technology and growth.

The course is taught via lectures, seminar discussions, and group activity, using a variety of learning and multimedia resources

Course Objectives

On completion of this module, the student should be able:

  • To evaluate the economic rationale for greater economic integration
  • To compare the diverse regional arrangements that have emerged globally
  • To have an understanding of the process of ‘globalization’ and its uneven regional impact, the role of transnational corporations and their impact on the process of regional economic integration
  • To explain why some regions are richer/poorer than others and assess what role public authorities can play at regional, national and/or supra-national levels
  • To evaluate the role of institutions such as the European Commission, WTO and IMF in the process of regional integration
